Michael Whelan

Materials Engineer

Michael joined the CREST team in January 2007 having previously worked as a laboratory technician in a civil engineering testing and consultancy facility. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Experimental Physics, obtained from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, in 2006. In 2014 Michael completed his PhD entitled “Nanostructued thin films for corrosion control of Al alloys” under the supervision of Dr Brendan Duffy and Dr John Cassidy.

Michael has worked on numerous collaborative research projects on both a national and European level and has received awards for commercialisation of developed technologies. Michael has previously held various positions within CREST and is currently working as a materials engineer supporting the delivery of Technology Gateway industry projects.

Michael's main research interests involve the development of novel surface treatments particularly for aluminium alloys and medical devices. Michael has previously developed patented anodising technology for aerospace grade aluminium alloys and has worked on a range of coating and electrochemical techniques to treat metallic surface for corrosion prevention.
